Hello, everyone,

The season has gone well so far.  My favourite rides have been the 64km classes I’ve done, one on Mirrie and one on Vilette. Both girls gave me their all and made every kilometre enjoyable.

The weather has just been incredible – I do love having a decent summer and it makes the winter more bearable having had a blast of sun, but the ground has suffered!! I’ve not done the hard fast canter work we’d usually do, as I wanted to keep the horses sound, which I’ve mostly done…..

Bella (it’s always Bella!) has thrown a little spanner in the works.  She came up lame a few days after a 40km ride, I think probably caused by messing around in the field at home. I had her leg X-rayed which was all clear. She has got a slight swelling to her tendon sheath. It was medicated and the vet was very proactive and said for her to have ten days rest, then come back into work (providing she’s sound). Her ten days are almost up so she’ll be trotted up and lunged and we’ll go from there.

Due to the weather I’ve used way, way more EquiGlo than I usually would. The horses would usually have a little taste every day, and then we’d primarily use it at rides, but they’ve been having great scoops of it every day while it’s been so dry and hot. I like it because it’s a “belly filler” - a great source of fibre while there isn’t so much grass and a great source of hydration, lessening the risk of impacting colic. The only snag is they’ve got used to having it twice a day so breaking that habit will cause a few grumpy ponies!!!

This photo shows Vilette following me around and “begging” like a labrador.
